Blood Clot Information

Blood clots form as the body’s way of stopping bleeding from damaged blood vessels and promoting healing.

Types of Blood Clots

1.Thrombus: A clot that forms and remains in one place, usually in a vein (deep vein thrombosis or DVT) or artery.

2.Embolus: A clot that breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream, potentially causing a blockage in the lungs (pulmonary embolism or PE), brain (leading to a stroke), or other organs.

Causes of Blood Clots

1.Prolonged immobility: Sitting for long periods, such as on a long flight or bed rest, can reduce blood flow, increasing the risk of clot formation.

2.Surgery or injury: Damage to blood vessels during surgery or due to trauma can lead to clot formation.

3.Medical conditions: Certain conditions like atrial fibrillation, heart disease, and cancer can increase the risk of clots.

4.Genetic factors: Some people inherit conditions that make their blood more likely to clot.
